Jordan Kilgore- The Shining

The Shining is one of the most iconic horror films of all time- and for good reason. It is characterized by lurching slow camera shots, creepy ambiences, and a terrifyingly deranged performance by Jack Nicholson, making it a tour-de-force of horror. The Overlook Hotel is brought to life as one of the most notorious settings in modern cinema through its vibrant colors and distinct decor. Overall, the movie is masterfully vague and unsettling. Stanley Kubrick puts many objects in the movie with hidden ambiguous meanings, and the shock value of such iconic scenes as the blood flooding the hallway and the man in the bear suit make the movie live on in the memories of cinema enthusiasts. Over the course of the film, we watch mysterious and sinister forces transform Jack Torrance, an ordinary father and writer into a deranged killer with no remaining sense of humanity. Shelley Duvall plays his dutiful wife, who must save herself and her son from her husband’s murderous grasp. Jack Nicholoson’s performance is compelling and discomforting, and he somehow makes an ordinary man seem like an object of nightmares. The Shining reigns supreme even now as one of the best horror films of all time.

Chapter 6 objectives

  1. The biggest difference between performing on stage and performing for the camera is the location of your audience. The second major difference between stage and camera acting is the familiarity of the material. Theater is by its very nature repetitive and therefore familiar. The third difference between stage and TV/Film is the iconic nature of the characters and celebrated performances of those characters.
  2. The film is the directors medium because they have to form it and sculpt it to fit what they want it to be portrayed.

12 Years a Slave

As much as I loved 12 Years a Slave, I won’t consider it one of my favorite movies because of how realistic it was. It was as disturbing as it was amazing. The performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender are chilling and unforgettable. Steve McQueen created a realistic snapshot of slavery that made me feel like I was there and certainly shared some of Solomon’s anguish. I think everyone should watch this movie at least once.

THE SHINNING ELIO

The Shinning uses amazing suspenseful music to set the mood. The mood of death and terror. As the scene carries on the more suspenseful the music gets. It’s like the musical director made the music for the terrors of Johnny and delusions. The music is amazing.

The shining is a great example of cases where music can intensify a certain situation taking place in a certain scene and can  help forshadow an occurence.

the shining

i thought that what mainly intensified this movie was the music. It really added to the creepy and suspenseful factors of what was happening. Another part being the complete abandonment in the setting. There was nothing near the hotel, making the escape hard, especially with all the snow. I thought that the bringing in of the past hotel keeper was cool because it helped Jack realize that he was crazy and maybe now he is too. Their child had a gift and he was able to speak to the dead girls in a way and his little friend, which sent messages out that they were in danger. The camera focused a lot on  the emotions of the actors more than their actions when they were in trouble and i think that helped to scare me as a part of the audience.

The Shining Movie Review

This was my first time watching this iconic movie.

The Shining is a huge masterpiece for a variety of reasons. The suspense within the film is incredible, and is only highlighted by the use of strings as an element of fright and shock. This is honestly one of the most visually pleasing films I have ever seen. I loved the coloring of the film and the subtle beauty of Shelley. The child actor was particularly talented as well. And don’t even get me started about Jack Nicholson he was SO GOOD. He’s incredibly talented. Stanley Kubrick is a master of suspense. He loves leaving audiences wanting more and curious about the intentions of his work. This is obvious particularly at the end, with the photo of Jack at the Overlook many years prior to the actual date of his residency. It has sparked countless conspiracy theories and has inspired filmmakers for decades to come.

Great work Stan.

The Shining

The shining was a very good movie. It was really scary. The way it was filmed and the music choice and the scenery made it add to the drama of the movie. All of these things made it more scary. The best part of the movie is when he breaks open the door and screams “here’s Johnny”. That personally is my favorite part because it is the height of drama in the movie.

The shin splits

The shining is a thriller that makes your mind go for a ride down splash mountain. Jack nicholson is a mad man he hears things just like his son who is insane in the membrane.
